End of Lease Cleaning Checklist — Brunswick & Inner North Melbourne

Moving out of a rental in Brunswick, Carlton, Northcote, or anywhere in Melbourne’s inner north? This is the checklist your property manager will use at final inspection, and the one we follow on every Smoover bond clean.

We’ve cleaned hundreds of inner-north apartments and houses. We know what agents from Nelson Alexander, Barry Plant, Jellis Craig, and Woodards check first, and where most DIY cleans fail.

Use this as your guide whether you’re cleaning yourself or booking a professional. If you want us to handle it, book a fixed-price bond clean from $420, everything on this checklist is included.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the first thing most agents check — and the most common reason for bond deductions. Ovens, rangehoods, and stovetops need to be spotless, not just wiped.

- Oven interior, racks and trays

Degrease completely. Remove racks and soak. Clean glass door inside and out including between panels. Agents open the oven first.

- Stovetop and burners

Remove burner caps and clean underneath. Scrub grease from grates. Wipe splashback behind the stove.

- Rangehood and filters

Remove filters and degrease. Wipe the hood exterior and interior. This is where most DIY cleans fall short.

- Cupboards — inside and out

Open every cupboard and drawer. Wipe shelves, base, and doors. Don’t forget the tops of wall-mounted cupboards — agents run a finger along them.

- Benchtops and splashback

Clean all surfaces. Remove stains from grout if tiled. Descale around the tap.

- Sink and taps

Scrub the basin, remove limescale from taps, clean the plug hole and drain cover.

- Dishwasher interior

Clean the filter, wipe the seal, and run an empty hot cycle with vinegar if needed.

- Fridge cavity (if applicable)

If the fridge stays, clean interior shelves, drawers, seals, and exterior. If it’s your fridge, clean the cavity it sat in.

- Floors

Sweep and mop. Pay attention to corners and under the fridge/oven space.

Bathroom and Toilet

Bathrooms are the second most scrutinised area. Mould, limescale, and soap scum need to be completely removed — not just covered up.

- Shower screen, tiles, and grout

Descale the shower screen. Scrub grout lines. Remove mould from silicone seals. Agents check grout closely.

- Bathtub (if applicable)

Scrub the tub, clean the plug hole, and remove any staining or soap residue.

- Toilet — bowl, cistern, base

Clean inside the bowl, under the rim, around the base, and the exterior of the cistern. Wipe the seat hinges.

- Vanity, sink, and mirror

Clean the basin, descale taps, wipe the vanity top and inside the cabinet. Clean the mirror streak-free.

- Exhaust fan

Remove the cover and clean the fan blades. Dust accumulation here is a common fail point.

- Towel rails and fixtures

Wipe down all chrome fixtures. Remove water spots.

- Floor tiles

Mop thoroughly. Clean grout lines. Pay attention to corners and behind the toilet.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are straightforward but the details matter — built-in wardrobes, skirting boards, and light switches are all checked.

- Built-in wardrobes — inside and out

Wipe all shelves, hanging rails, drawer bases, and door tracks. Vacuum the wardrobe floor.

- Walls

Spot clean scuff marks, fingerprints, and marks from picture hooks. Normal wear is expected — heavy marking may need a full wall wash.

- Skirting boards and door frames

Hand-wipe all skirting boards. Wipe door frames, handles, and the top edge of doors.

- Light switches and power points

Wipe clean. Remove fingerprints and dust.

- Windows — glass, frames, and tracks

Clean internal glass. Wipe window frames. Scrub window tracks — this is a very common fail point that agents specifically check.

- Carpet or floors

Vacuum carpet thoroughly. If carpet was professionally cleaned at the start of your lease, you’ll likely need professional steam cleaning again. Hard floors should be mopped.

- Ceiling fan and light fittings

Dust ceiling fan blades and light fittings. Remove cobwebs from corners.

Living and Dining Areas

- Floors

Vacuum and mop all floor areas. Move any remaining furniture to clean underneath.

- Walls and skirting boards

Spot clean marks. Wipe skirting boards along the full length of the room.

- Windows and sliding doors

Clean glass, frames, and tracks. Sliding door tracks collect debris — scrub them out.

- Light fittings, switches, and fans

Dust and wipe all fittings. Remove cobwebs from ceiling corners.

- Air conditioning filters (if applicable)

Remove filters and clean. Wipe the exterior of the unit.

Laundry

- Laundry tub and taps

Scrub the tub, descale taps, clean the drain.

- Cupboards

Wipe inside and out.

- Dryer lint filter

Clean the lint filter. Wipe the dryer exterior if the dryer stays.

- Floors

Sweep and mop. Clean behind the washing machine area.

General — Whole Property

- All doors and door frames

Wipe handles, edges, and the top of door frames.

- All light switches and power points

Wipe every switch plate in the property.

- Cobwebs

Remove from all ceiling corners, behind doors, and window frames.

- Garage or car space (if applicable)

Sweep the floor. Remove oil stains if possible. Wipe any shelving.

- Balcony (if applicable)

Sweep floor. Clean glass panels or railings. Wipe any fixtures. Note: balcony cleaning is an add-on if beyond normal condition.
